Parent Training

The Hanen Centre is a Canadian based charitable organization focused on helping children who may have language delays or may be at risk for language delays communicate to the best of their abilities. Hanen achieves this goal by creating research based programs and training techniques for speech-language pathologist to teach families of children with communication delays. More than 25,000 speech-language pathologists in 100 different countries are using Hanen resources to support families of children with communication delays! Hanen recognizes that parents are the most important people in their child's life and one of the greatest gifts a parent can give their child is help with communication and connections with the world. "Help turn every moment of a child's life into an opportunity to communicate" - Hanen

The Hanen Programs offer:

  • Small parent group classes which meet weekly over a course of 8-12 weeks.
  • A pre-program visit with your Hanen Certified speech-language pathologist
  • Three individual visits for you and your child with the speech-language pathologist which will help guide your child's communication goals throughout the course and into the future. These individual visits also provide video feedback sessions of you interacting with your child, so you can "see" what is helping with your child's communication.
  • Wonderfully illustrated guide book for at home use.

At APT we offer the following Hanen Programs: It Takes Two to Talk (ITTT): The Hanen Program ® for Parents of Children who have Language Delays.

About the Program: ITTT is recognized around the world for its research based on how parents communicate with their children and how the communication skills of children with language delays can improve with their parent's help. During the ITTT program, parents will learn practical ways to help their child learn language during everyday routines and activities.

Parents will learn:

  • Your child's current stage of communication development and how to encourage communication within the stage and beyond.
  • What motivates your child to communicate?
  • How to respond to your child in ways that will improve his/her language learning.
  • How to communicate so your child can understand and learn new ideas and words.
  • How to turn everyday activities into opportunities for language learning and communication.

More than Words: The Hanen Program ® for Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
